The ATAF Executive Secretary, Ms Mary Baine, visited the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) in Banjul, engaging with the authority’s leadership on ongoing collaboration and areas for further cooperation.
Welcoming the delegation, GRA Commissioner General, Mr Yankuba Darboe highlighted the value of the partnership:
“ATAF’s programmes are practical, relevant and tailored to the real challenges our revenue officers face every day. Our staff have benefited immensely from the training and technical assistance provided.”
He noted that this support has contributed to stronger compliance performance and improvements in domestic revenue mobilisation.
Reflecting on the engagement, the Executive Secretary emphasised the shared commitment underpinning the partnership:
“The Gambia Revenue Authority is a longstanding and valued member of ATAF. Under the leadership of Commissioner General Darboe, it has demonstrated strong commitment to a truth that ATAF holds dear: that domestic resource mobilisation is key to national development across Africa. The partnership between our two institutions is about advancing that in a practical and sustainable manner.”
The discussions focused on the technical assistance currently being delivered to The Gambia and how this support can continue to respond to the administration’s evolving needs. Attention was also given to broader efforts to strengthen tax systems, including the use of digital tools, the strengthening of tax policy frameworks, and the addressing of cross-border risks such as illicit financial flows.
The visit also touched on ongoing international tax discussions, including work under the United Nations Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation and the importance of coordinated African engagement in shaping global tax outcomes.
During the engagement, Commissioner General Darboe agreed to serve as one of ATAF’s champions, supporting efforts to amplify Africa’s voice on tax matters and strengthen coordinated continental positions in regional and global processes.
