On 3 July 2025, the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF), in partnership with Juta and Company officially launched Volume 5 of the African Multidisciplinary Tax Journal (AMTJ), recently accredited by Scopus (Elsevier), one of the world’s leading indexing platforms for peer-reviewed literature.

The launch served as a powerful reminder of the AMTJ’s growing influence in shaping tax policy and advancing professional growth across the continent.
At the launch of AMTJ Volume 5, a key session featured authors from Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, and Côte d’Ivoire who shared how publishing in the Journal had shaped their careers, informed national tax policies, and enhanced research visibility. Their reflections highlighted the AMTJ’s role as a catalyst for academic advancement, policy impact, and locally driven tax solutions.

Career advancement through academic recognition

Dr. Traoré Nohoua, an Associate Professor at the University Alassane Ouattara of Bouaké in Côte d’Ivoire, who published in volume 2 of the AMTJ emphasised how the visibility that came with publishing in the AMTJ was life-changing.
“The AMTJ played a role in advancing my academic career. After publishing I was promoted to a full lecturer at our University ”

Policy impact and empowerment at FIRS

In Nigeria, Associate Professor Aisha Mahmoud Hamman, now a Special Advisor to the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), described how publishing in the AMTJ shaped not only national tax dialogue but her own trajectory.
“Publishing in the AMTJ boosted my credibility in the tax policy space. The paper influenced policy reform conversations at FIRS, helping move discussions from assumptions to evidence-based decisions.”

She described the journey from ATAF’s research training in Nigeria to publication as “intense and rewarding,” and urged African women researchers to believe in their abilities:
“Sisters, don’t underestimate your God-given analytical skills. We need African solutions to African tax issues and the AMTJ is the place to publish them.”

Professional recognition and visibility in Togo

Dr. Paulin Bate, from the Togolese Revenue Office (OTR), highlighted how contributing to the AMTJ elevated his professional visibility:
“My articles received awards and attracted attention. I was introduced to the OTR research team by the Director General Dr Philippe Tchodie, and I’ve since been contacted by firms interested in my work. The Journal’s accreditation is a testament to its quality and our expertise as African researchers.”

Supporting policy reform and innovation in Ghana

Dr. Alex Kombat, Assistant Commissioner for Tax Research and Policy at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), credited the AMTJ as a practical tool that supported policy development, especially in the wake of Ghana’s growing digital economy.
“Reading the AMTJ gave me the knowledge base to contribute to Ghana’s e-commerce tax reforms. I played a key role in developing the registration portal for digital platforms. Today, I’m considered a subject-matter expert in this area and it’s thanks in part to the AMTJ.”
He noted that he regularly uses AMTJ papers in presentations and has contributed his own article on environmental taxation to Volume 5.
As these testimonials show, the AMTJ is more than just a journal, it is a springboard for local solutions, policy innovation, and professional growth. Its trilingual publication model (English, French, Portuguese) ensures accessibility and inclusion, while Scopus accreditation cements its position as Africa’s leading platform for tax and policy research.

For African tax professionals seeking to make an impact, the message is clear: The AMTJ is where Africa’s tax future is being written, one paper at a time.
