On 7 May 2026, ATAF hosted a delegation from Nigeria’s Office of the Tax Ombudsman for a benchmarking and knowledge-sharing visit to strengthen tax ombud systems and enhance taxpayer oversight.
Led by Nigeria’s Tax Ombudsman, the delegation engaged with ATAF experts and counterparts from South Africa’s Office of the Tax Ombud to exchange experiences and practical lessons on promoting fairness, accountability, and good governance within tax administration.
The discussions explored the evolving role of tax ombudsman offices in improving taxpayer confidence while supporting effective tax administration. Participants examined approaches to safeguarding taxpayer rights, strengthening dispute resolution mechanisms, and enhancing the independence and effectiveness of tax ombud institutions.
The engagement also highlighted the contribution that strong taxpayer oversight frameworks can make to domestic revenue mobilisation. By fostering trust between taxpayers and revenue authorities, tax ombudsman offices can help create an environment that encourages voluntary compliance and strengthens the overall integrity of tax systems.
The visit provided an opportunity for peer learning and institutional dialogue, allowing participants to share experiences and explore practical approaches to building responsive, transparent, and service-oriented tax administrations.
